I produced the high fidelity prototype and helped with the research.
LET ROOMMATE USE THIER FAVORITE APPS TO COMMUNICATE.
Communication between roommates and division of chores is challenging. Everyone uses different apps or means to communicate and forcing them to use different apps might not result in better communication due to the disruptive nature of it.
A PLATFORM FOR ALL THINGS COMMUNICATION.
If there was a platform where all the applications used for communication, specifically communication around roommates and chores, everyone would be more satisfied with the experience
LOOK AT THE CHALLENGE FROM THE USER'S POINT OF VIEW.
We followed the following process
We interviewed about half a dozen students and sent out surveys to about 25 other students. We found the following areas of conflict and opportunities for us:
- Chore Charts: an easy way to assign chores around the house fairly.
- Utilities shares: a way to submit bills and have it divided by numbers of occupants and showing their share and total amount of the bill.
- Money sharing: free way of transferring money to each other
- Bed/study time: a way to communicate when a roommate needs quiet to study or sleep
- Event Calendar: a shared calendar that prevents any surprises. e.i. roommate's parents visiting
We also looked into existing applications to see how they handle roommate situation. We were not able to find any app that could handle all of the needs.
We brainstormed ideas and decided that adding another app to the mix is not the answer to the problem we have. Collectively, after walking our data, we agreed that there is a need for a platform which can connect all the existing apps and solutions in a single location/app.
We got started by doing some paper prototype.
We performed cognitive walkthrough on the low fidelity. We evaluated the following tasks:
Paying their rent
Viewing the chores
Exploring where they can rant and discuss their pet peeves
- If someone ate your food where would you go?
The cognitive walkthrough resulted in the following recommendations:
On the “Sign Up” page we will allow users to create an account with a username and password instead of having to login through Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Include some notifications on the homepage so the users can receive an overall feedback.
Allow users to send attachments such as pictures in the “Rant” function and the “Food” function.
HEM | A ROOMMATE PLATFORM
After incorporating the recommendations from our cognitive walkthrough and user evaluation we came up with a high fidelity prototype of our solution; An app/platform that lets you use all your favorite apps to communicate with your roommates. Please feel free to explore it here, it's an interactive prototype.
THE SALES PITCH
We then presented this idea to our stakeholders. Please use the blue arrows to navigate though the presentation.
